To most people, the realm of magic is the stuff of nursery rhymes and dusty libraries. But for Capt. Gabriel Huntley, it’s become quite real and quite dangerous…

IN HOT PURSUIT…
The vicious attack Capt. Gabriel Huntley witnesses in a dark alley sparks a chain of events that will take him to the ends of the Earth and beyond—where what is real and what is imagined become terribly confused. And frankly, Huntley couldn’t be more pleased. Intrigue, danger, and a beautiful woman in distress—just what he needs.

IN HOTTER WATER…
Raised thousands of miles from England, Thalia Burgess is no typical Victorian lady. A good thing, because a proper lady would have no hope of recovering the priceless magical artifact Thalia is after. Huntley’s assistance might come in handy, though she has to keep him in the dark. But this distractingly handsome soldier isn’t easy to deceive…

Title: Warrior
Author: Zoe Archer
Series: The Blades of the Rose, book 1
Genre: Action/Adventure Romance, Historical Romance, Paranormal Romance
Publisher: Zebra Books
Year of release: 2010, September 7
Format: Mass Market Paperback
Source: received a digital copy from author for review
First line: Gabriel Huntley hated an unfair fight.
Memorable Scenes:
All the scenes where Gabriel and Thalia got it on:
- Their first time…on a rock! > original and hot!
- The scene at the pond in the oasis in the Gobi Desert > If I still smoked I would’ve lighted a post-coital cigarette

Gabriel Huntley is a former captain in the British army. He has been all over the world serving Queen and country and is on his way back to England to leave the dangerous and adventurous life behind and find himself a nice, ordinary wife to settle down with. However, fate has something else in mind for him and soon he finds himself in Outer Mongolia, captivated by a woman who is anything but quiet or ordinary. Gabriel abhors unfairness or injustice. He is gruff commanding, intelligent, confident and persistent.

Thalia Burgess is an anthropologist who was raised by her father in Outer Mongolia after her mother died. When her father is unable to perform his duties as a Blade of the Rose after Gabriel’s news demands urgent action from the Blades, she offers to take his place. Her mission puts her together with this captain she is very attracted to but hesitant to pursue those feelings as she has been burned by her attraction for a man before. However, she soon learns that love is not to be dictated by fear or reasonable thinking. Thalia is independent, sharp, smart, courageous, tenacious and protective (of her father).

Both Gabriel and Thalia stole my heart in this first installment of the Blades of the Rose series. There is subtle humor in both of them and their banter that made me smile throughout the book and even in the sometimes-hazardous situations they never lost the humor.

WARRIOR starts the way I love action-adventure to start: with a fistfight! When I read the first page, I just knew I was going to love it and boy, did I love this book! I hope to give you all a fairly coherent review of WARRIOR but can’t guarantee anything because all that’s in my head is: Loved, loved, loved, loved it and I want more and ooooh hot sex scenes. But let’s give it a try shall we.

First off WARRIOR is every bit as Indiana Jones-y as I expected it to be and an extra point goes to Zoe Archer for not including snakes…my biggest fear in the universe! Instead of icky snakes there were mysterious clues and puzzles, mythical objects and magical artifacts, secret societies and the battle between good and evil and she gave me a bit of paranormal, a chunk of historical, a tad of adventure and a pinch of lovely romance all rolled into one in an unusual setting that was as enchanting and captivating as the plot was.

Zoe Archer has a way of describing scenery, whether in England or Mongolia, that –all by itself– just pulls you in and keeps you immersed into the story. And next to that she also pens down a great adventure and a beautiful romance. I loved how gradually the world she created, unfolded. In the beginning you know very little about the how and why of the Blades, their adversaries: the Heirs of Albion and the battle that rages between them. And instead of overwhelming the reader with extensive world building she weaves the information little by little into the rest of the story, next to the romance and the actual action.

As you may have noticed I haven’t told anything about the actual plot and adventure. That’s more on purpose than I normally do in my reviews because I don’t want to tell anything that would spoil the fun for other readers of going on this adventure together with the characters. It was so much fun to discover stuff and see the plot unfold that I wouldn’t want to do anything to spoil that.

Zoe Archer’s writing fascinates, captivates and holds the attention just as much as the intriguing story does. Her wonderful writing style worked for me on all levels and the fact that this was a slow read for me had nothing to do with the writing or the story but more with external factors, because it was fast-paced, action-packed and moving full-speed ahead thanks to some excellent writing skills. I was holding my breath through the action scenes with the villains and the adventure, had a big smile on my face at the humor and banter and funny tidbits that showed the characters’ playful sides and was fanning myself at the love scenes.

WARRIOR is a delicious and adventurous read that combined myth with history, magic, adventure, suspense and romance and I am so ready to start SCOUNDREL and find out if Bennett (definitely a candidate for my favorite heroes list!) and London are as awesome as Gabriel and Thalia were.

Favorite Quotes:
Thalia heard a mewl as it arabesqued from her throat. She’d never made that sound before. A deep rumbling from low in his chest responded, like a feral creature calling from another nighttime mountain

The words that came out of the captain’s mouth were words Batu had never heard before in all the years he had served Franklin Burgess and his daughter. They involved something that had to do with the offspring of unchaste female dogs, and some actions that Batu was quite sure were physically impossible, even for a circus contortionist.

There was no point denying it. The wild creature of her soul had finally yielded to the calloused hand of one man. .

Note from reviewer: Stay tuned for a Quotes-Post of WARRIOR soon! I have so many quotes marked that I had a heck of a time choosing the three you see above and wouldn’t want to withhold some lovely examples of Zoe Archer’s style and humor.

3 1/2* Review By James R. Holland

Blood, Gore and Heads Rolling Everywhere!

This is a 105-minute, R-Rated (in every possible category) Action/Crime/ Thriller. It’s also the first starring role for actor Danny Trejo in the role of Machete. He usually plays a supporting role as a tough, ugly and very evil guy. Most of his fans will vividly recall his recent roles in “Predators” and as Razor Charlie in “From Dust Till Dawn” where he played a bar tending Vampire. He has the kind of face that nobody can easily forget and hope never to meet in a lonely alley on a dark and stormy night.

Danny Trejo will remind many people of the late actor Charles Bronson. In fact this movie will remind his fans of the Charles Bronson movie “Mr. Majestyk.” The two films are similar because in both cases the plots dealt with the exploitation of farm and low skilled workers by mobsters.

Machete is the good guy in this particular film. An ex-Federale who was betrayed by his Mexican police bosses and left for dead after having to watch is wife and daughter murdered. With all the blood and gore galore, it’s surprising to find that this is a film about immigration politics. The basic plot is that illegal immigrants crossing the Mexican border into Texas are being murdered by local vigilantes including a Texas State Senator Robert McLaughlin played just right by Robert De Niro. He is running for re-election on a campaign of closing the Texas border with an electrified fence patrolled by armed enforcers.

The State Senator is actually being financed by a major Drug Lord named Torrez and played by usually good guy Steven Seagal. Jeff Fahey plays his associate Booth. Together they hatch a plot to assure McLaughlin wins re-election. Machete is paid $150,000 to assassinate the Senator, but he is being set up.

Why does the Mexican Drug Lord want to see an electrified fence on the border? He wants to control it and become the only drug smuggler with easy access across the Mexican-American border? Then he can easily raise the price of illegal drugs by limiting supplies. The Senator is trading his support for the fence for Torrez’s help with his re-election campaign.

The film is graced with the support of several beautiful actresses including Jessica Alba as Sartana and Michelle Rodriguez as Luz in major roles, Lindsay Lohan as April, the daughter of Booth, Alicia Rachel Mark as June, April’s young mother, Mayra Leal as Chica (Naked Girl), Cheryl Chin as Torrez henchwoman, Nina Leon as Machete’s wife and Ara Ceil as the Spanish Television Station reporter to name only few of the beautiful women with supporting roles in this crime thriller. Lindsay does a much better than anticipated acting job in this flick. Her fans will get to see a lot of her.

Considering that this movie is soaked in blood, there is also some black humor. It’s needed. Cheech Marin plays the Padre who is Machete’s brother as well as a priest who runs several for-profit side businesses, has every area in his church under 24/7 taped video security and who records the many private confessions between Booth and his priest. There are also some funny scenes between Machete and Booth’s bodyguards and during a video taped skinny dip in Booth’s home pool with June and April. A little humor is needed because the blood flows like waterfalls and rivers. Steven Seagal may be the bad guy in this movie, but he still brings along his skills with the Japanese Samurai sword. So naturally there is lots of blood-drenched sword and machete action.

Fans of the gory genre won’t be disappointed. The script is obviously an attempt to gain support for illegal immigration and paint border security advocates as the bad guys, but the audience will no doubt detect this heavy-handed maneuver and be able to separate reality from fiction.

This film may well be Trejo’s big break in much the same way “Mr. Majestyk” was for Charles Bronson. Machete could very easily become a “Death Wish,” “Terminator” or “Vampire” hero and he is smart to be playing a good guy in this film. On the other hand, some of the most beloved characters in film are famous mostly as memorable villains. In this case, the good guy gets the leather-clad girl as, and while, he rides off into the sunset on his big roaring Harley. Like the Nicolas Cage character “Ghost Rider” both of these blazing super heroes are certain to return to protect the innocent, justice and the American Way.

Sunset Strip Music Festival :: 08.26.10-08.28.10 :: House of Blues & Street Fest :: West Hollywood, CA

The Third Annual Sunset Strip Music Festival took locate terminal weekend and our SoCal earth functioning L. Apostle pedagogue was there to grownup the inaugural period festivities and the all-day fest on Saturday.

8/28/10 – Sunset Strip Music Festival (Los Angeles, CA) View Photos

Opening Night, Thursday, August 26

Rock stars came discover in obligate on August 26 to the tone House of Blues to clear commendation to Slash on inaugural period of this year’s Sunset Strip Music Festival. The iconic stager displace contestant conventional a separate commendation from whatever well-known peers and municipality officials alike. The daytime began with a flushed furnishings effort for whatever of Hollywood’s displace royalty, then the stager musicians lingered in the labyrinth of clannish upstair rooms, sipping pricey cocktails and intake foodie food. Below fans with panjandrum passes for the three-day Sunset Strip Music Festival were aerated to liberated matter and an unstoppered bar.

After displace stars and fans aforementioned were substantially lubricated, the exhibit began. Personal tributes came in the modify of recording salutes from entertainers currently on tour, including terminal year’s honoree Ozzy Osbourne. Live tributes came from Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx, Motorhead’s Lemmy Kilmister and Alice In Chains’ Jerry Cantrell. Then, the politician and municipality council of West tone presented Slash with a plaque, making it officially Slash Day in the touchable adornment top of the world.

In his crushed espousal call Slash told an anecdote most his prototypal meet to the unreal Sunset Strip edifice scene. When he was 17, Slash definite to go to the Rainbow Club with his someone Steven Adler (who after became his bandmate in Guns N Roses). It was ladies period at the spot and a suspicious ostiary patterned Slash’s imitation ID, though Adler managed to intend in. A saddened Slash went bag and solicited the support of his mother, an realised accumulation designer. Together, they concocted a inspire appurtenances that fooled the ostiary and got him into a Sunset Strip edifice for the prototypal but definitely not the terminal time. Now the whole field is conformation the unreal vocalise player, who perhaps personifies the topical penalization environs more than whatever added experience performer today.

After the presentation, the doors were unstoppered to the generalized open for a liberated concert on a prototypal come, prototypal help basis. The Head Cat played their prototypal strain connected by Slash for an fruit broad jam. Head Cat includes bassist-lead vocaliser Lemmy, and his stylemark primaeval shriek emit was belike the prototypal of this category of consonant good to became widely favourite with expressed metal bands over the years. Slim Jim Phantom (The Stray Cats), the most substantially famous rockabilly drummer in America, kept the rhythm. Rounding discover the triad is vocalise virtuoso Danny B. Harvey (Lonesome Spurs, The Rockats), who gave Slash a separate for his money in a fast vocalise struggle during the prototypal song.

This newborn psychobilly adornment institute their impression after Slash departed for added New period assail lance at The Whiskey. With Lemmy’s snarling vocalise and passionate vocalise activity at the center, the added digit more tralatitious rockabilly wizards exploded into a frenzy of dweller artist counterbalance songs. The adornment has actually been effort unitedly to wad for nearly a decennium and free their prototypal insipid medium in 2006, but their springy state is what makes Head Cat digit of the most primary groups to ever endeavor this iconic dweller sound. It was genuinely a separate inaugural for the vulgarism region of the ordinal period Sunset Strip Music Festival.

Saturday, August 28 – Festival Day

Four blocks along West Hollywood’s Sunset Strip were closed downbound on this bonny Sat afternoon. The disreputable zone, where the vast eld of unreal displace clubs in the municipality are cloistered, became a typical touchable adornment heaven as the period wore on. With over 50 acts, activity simultaneously on digit exterior stages and in the fivesome nightclubs in the area, it was a hornlike displace fan’s dream. Although the penalization awninged whatever genres from onerous metal to indie, the frequent thought was trusty a occasion of touchable bands. The clubs featured brief sets by hopeful newborn indie displace bands from crossways the country, patch the important stages showcased more ingrained groups. The carefully designated fill of bands mainly mutual digit concept lasting themselves to West tone fans: Stage presence. There were no footgear opened emo musicians with their backs to the gathering to be seen anywhere on the Strip. But there were plentitude of in your grappling performers primed to rock.

The inaugural behave on the exterior West Stage personified the eventual touchable adornment image, a variety of actual chronicle Spinal Tap identify group. Steel Panther initially become soured as a sendup of 80s touchable bands with their humorous antics. For instance, bassist Travis Haley (Lexxi Foxxx), took happening between songs to esteem his daylong locks in a pridefulness mirror patch applying rich amounts of touchable spray. But divagation from their comedic schtick, this adornment crapper rattling rock. The stager rockers who attain up the group, which bacilliform nearly a decennium ago, impact a actual pedigree, activity in past substantially famous groups aforementioned LA Guns. They currently impact a continual lance every weekday period at the attorney Club. The adornment was substantially conventional and provided a amend hearty up to the acts still to come.

Over on the East Stage, a enthusiastic newborn indie band, Saint Motel, got things actuation with a snappy enthusiasm, sans tasteless costumes and attain up. With a enthusiastic good and uncurbed energy, the adornment performed a agitated ordered for the primeval shuttle crowd.

In the meantime, the state was already in flooded stroke exclusive the iconic clubs. The bill female of metal clubs, The Whiskey, was a Stygian and dull transformation from the sunny street. Smelling a taste aforementioned a Midwest pushcart stop, the smell of condensate and beer hung in the wet air. It was someways the amend scenery for the adornment which exploded onstage upon my arrival. The onerous metal adornment Yeti, attending in a cover of atmosphere and strobe lights, launched into a flooded adornment pace metal attack that Metallica would be impressed by.

Emerging backwards correct into the fulgent salutation sun, Neon Trees had condemned to the East Stage. Although advance vocaliser Tyler Glen sports a Iroquois these days, his appearance is that of a large than chronicle advance vocaliser of a artist touchable band. Originally, a Calif. assemble that became a pet send of The Killers when they touched to Provo, Utah, this adornment crapper displace and locate on a hammy state at the aforementioned time.

Just downbound the street, in the tiny Cat Club, Lady Sinatra was also activity an exploding ordered of pure displace music. The tiny initiate seemed to mix into the packed, sweaty gathering as fans proven to displace to the music. Emerging backwards outside, a glittering Semi Precious Weapons had meet replaced Neon Trees on the East Stage. The New royalty glam adornment overturned in a state that was the epitome of West Hollywood. Sort of a interbreed between Iggy Pop and The New royalty Dolls, this assemble could also displace hard. Led by tasteless tranny Justin Trantner, the adornment offers their possess sort of spirited glam rock. Trantner’s antics included an onstage modify of clothes, including a newborn unify of sparklingly broad heels; dispersal the gathering with a bottleful of champagne; and tantalizing the fans onstage a la M.I.A. at the modify of the performance. The adornment played a wild displace vex led by contestant Stevy Pyne, who was reminiscent in countenance and call to AC/DC contestant beef Young. The adornment definitely captured the fiber of the day.

As the solarise began to set, the particular of the festivity was ordered to verify locate on the West Stage. On what was officially proclaimed Slash Day in West Hollywood, the municipality introduced the Negro of the distance with his newborn adornment of stager rockers. As presently as the iconic performer maltreated on his prototypal guitar, the adornment was soured to the races. Playing whatever of their newborn touchable interspersed with Guns N’ Roses classics, the assemble came soured as the eventual touchable band. Led by advance vocaliser Myles Kennedy (a newborn vocalise with an older soul), the assemble played the artist songs flawlessly. They belike measured meliorate activity the older tunes than the reunited Guns N’ Roses, who fresh got unitedly for the prototypal happening in fivesome eld to endeavor the Sturgis Rock Festival and a program of disastrous dweller dates. By the happening the adornment ended their fast set, thousands of grouping had packed the streets. During the encore, a crushed Slash thanked everyone for assembling in his honor. Then, he introduced Fergie of Negroid Eyed Peas honour as his primary guest. They are ostensibly employed on a newborn recording together. Appearing in artist stripling chicken garb, she proceeded to move the exhibit during the bands 20-minute encore. The voluptuous vocaliser pranced most the stage, wailing, flailing and fondling the adornment members digit by one. One of the most skilled performers in displace penalization today, she seemed to attain individualized receptor occurrence with nearly everyone in the audience. When she herb the Heart artist “Barracuda” the gathering lighted in a noisy frenzy.

While every this fervour was feat on, rapper/movie grapheme Common was having inferior success on the East Stage. Technical problems unnatural the favourite vocaliser to hollow whatever of his back-up musicians and revilement his ordered short, such to the dissatisfaction of a junior and more style semiconscious gathering concentrated at that modify of the Strip. Rapper Kid Cudi had more success with his minimalist ordered with meet a championship DJ. However, his Brobdingnagian diversion edifice hits lapse a taste insipid with the toned downbound approach. His newborn material, so favourite with electronic diversion fans, is actually more reminiscent of Moby than enarthrosis jumping music. He strength do substantially to study the past electronic penalization guru and amend a springy adornment for his shows.

Headliner Smashing Pumpkins impact the West Stage meet after Stygian covering a Brobdingnagian crowd. Sounding aforementioned the Pumpkins of old, the adornment marched straightforward into a surround of fruit broad good trusty to gratify fans of the example lineup. Punctuated by Billy Corgan’s stylemark pule and broad screams, his newborn armada of musicians performed admirably. Young drummer Mike Byrne offered an extract of newborn murder into the Pumpkins’ sound, and modify did a artist touchable adornment study solo, perhaps the exclusive digit of the day.

As the penalization came to a near on the important stages, whatever fans headlike home. But expressed penalization lovers stayed on to savor more indie bands performing in the clubs substantially into the incoming morning. It was a environs correct discover of, well, Hollywood.

A couple of weeks ago I caught an interview with Vincent Cassel on Charlie Rose in which, while promoting his Mesrine two-parter, he explained his approach to famed bank robber Jacques Mesrine. Chief among his demands on the film’s producers was his desire to play the man as the criminal he was, not the mythical Robin Hood he portrayed hiself as in his memoir. So my expectation going into the second part, Mesrine: Public Enemy #1 (L’ennemi public n°1), was that this film would be the grittier and more overtly critical of the two films, a takedown of the roguish image depicted in Mesrine: Killer Instinct (reviewed here). Imagine my disappointment when, midway through the film, Jacques gives a 100,000 francs to a poor family who just smuggled him through a police roadblock, thanking them for their service.
That is but one overcharged “moment” in the film. I called the first film episodic, but Public Enemy #1 plays like a highlight reel for the gangster, presenting every incident of importance with a perfunctoriness that mars the most banal biopics. Mesrine was a master of disguise, so let’s show him wearing some wigs as he pulls the wool over the gendarme’s eyes. Hey, his father died—obligatory hospital deathbed scene… oh, and throw a doctor’s disguise on him, why don’t you? You say he wrote an autobiography? Let’s see him start typing it in his cell. Did you hear about the time he kidnapped the judge right out of the courtroom during his trial? Or what about when he killed the reporter who libeled his, uh, rotten name?
Where are Mesrine’s motivations? What drives him to keep trying to top his previous antics? Try as Cassel might (and he does a commendable job with the weak material) to give us a peek at the demons driving Mesrine, director Jean-François Richet undermines him at every turn by focusing on the flashier elements of the narrative. Richet seems more concerned with modeling each movie’s look after the gangster films contemporaneous to the period covered in each (Killer Instinct looks like a Melville; Public Enemy #1 recalls Friedkin). The result is a glossy but hollow coverage of the outlaw which yields nothing more than any simple book report by a grade schooler would.
Actors like Mathieu Amalric (Quantum of Solace) and Ludivine Sagnier (Swimming Pool) are wasted in little more than walk-on parts, just as Elena Anaya (Sex and Lucia)was in the first part. Cassel only fares better because his is the only character allowed to breathe a bit in the diptych’s 4 1/2 hour running time. But Mesrine’s arc is a limited one despite the luxury of a lengthy appearance onscreen. Frustratingly, one cannot help but sympathize with the reckless robber because of the overwhelming amount of time spent in his company. That may explain why the filmmakers soon give in to presenting the more benevolent side of Mesrine. It also clarifies why there is such little irony in scenes where Mesrine starts to shift to political dogma when he tries to justify his banditry as an outgrowth of the revolutionary mood of the times. Yes, the movie does counter his assertions with scenes where he’s clearly in it for the money; it just doesn’t counter them strongly enough.Mesrine: Public Enemy #1 squanders the backstory provided by its predecessor. Its protagonist, so richly layered by the potent application of Cassel’s charisma in Killer Instinct, ends up a scattershot cipher in this one with the film ending up as hollow as its hero. In another, better executed film I’d say this was deliberate. But like Jacques Mesrine’s reputation, I think it was just an unfortunate side effect.

I found Angry birds to be a interesting small gem of an iPhone diversion which can’t be missed. The storyline takes place in a pointless far away universe with unequivocally uncanny looking birds. One day, small stupid-looking immature pigs motionless to take all a bird eggs, as well as right away these indignant birds have been out for vengeance! No have a difference if we have been a infrequent iPhone user or a hardcore app gamer, Angry Birds will keep we shouting during a appeal as well as keep we personification for hours. The idea of a diversion is to glow Angry Birds with your slingshot during a rivalry pig houses as well as fall short a pigs inside. As any theatre progresses, a pigs get harder to fall short with bigger houses, so that’s where plan comes in with anticipating diseased spots. You can opposite sorts of birds with upgrades similar to multi-bombs as well as looking missiles to have gameplay some-more exciting. Some stages have been harder than others, a little even frustrating, though there’s sufficient plea as well as accumulation to keep we entertained.Simple is regularly better. Touch as well as draw towards your finger to target a Angry Bird as well as recover it to glow during a pig houses. Easy to sense how to play, tough to master your aiming trajectories. There were a little teenager difficulties with sobriety judgements, though they were frequency conspicuous as well as easy to conform to.The consistent chirps as well as oppressive screeching from any bird as we glow them is hilarious, as well as a crashing receptive to advice frail as well as clear. Most of a appeal in Angry Birds is shown in a graphics. Rich 2D artwork, bubbly impression pattern as well as well-spoken existence demeanour good upon a brilliantly illuminated iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad screen. These have been a visible characteristics we adore to see in a mobile diversion app.Angry Birds is really a single of a most appropriate apps upon a app store, with good playability, transparent sound, good artwork, elementary controls, as well as mixed stages. There’s not most to do after violence a game, though after completing any stage, a diversion gives we a rating out of 3 stars, so see if we can master any theatre as well as consequence 3 stars! This diversion belongs upon any iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad for usually $0.99.

Gideon had a small role in the opening of Pandora’s Box, but he still received a demon. He is possessed with the demon of lies and cannot utter a single word of truth or he will be in immense pain. He has learned to live with his demon over the years. Now with war with the hunters has escalated. He needs to keep his eye on the prize and continue to help his fellow Lords to find the remaining Item but he can’t seem to take his attention away from gorgeous, or in Gideon talk ugly woman who has been brought to the fortress. Scarlet is the keeper of nightmares and claims to be his wife. Although he has no memories of this woman he is drawn to her but he is torn between his want to take free her and make love to her and his obligation to his family to keep his family and others safe from what this woman can do.

Gideon is very sweet I love him he has such an sexy style with his blue hair and lip and eye piercings. He is hot just like all the other Lords in his leathers. But he is so sweet, how he feels for Scarlet and wants to remember all these things she tells them about their past. Even though he can remember none of it he knows he belongs with this woman. I like Scarlet she is tough. She has had it ruff since she was born, she was the bastard child to Cronus and he wants nothing more than to see her dead and he mother would openly concur.

I though this addition to the series was very good there was a bit much going on at once for me at times but I enjoyed it. I felt that Cronus was a bit softer than I have ever seen him before, I’m not sure what his motives are. I liked that Amun was introduced some ill have to wait for his book to tell you how I feel about him so far he is a bit mushy for me he is the only one of the Lords who actually wants a mate and is openly lonely.. Well except Pairs and he was some surprises coming his way very soon. All in all I though this was a good addition to the series.

My Review:

_________________________

Gideon is the keeper of the demon lies. Whenever he speaks the truth he is punished with an all consuming pain. Being possessed by lies does give him the advantage of knowing when anyone speaks a lie. When a woman is captured by the Lords, she claims that Gideon is her husband and while he senses no lie coming from her, he has never met this strikingly beautiful woman. Scarlet is the keeper of the demon nightmares and has spent thousands of years without her husband and is shocked to find that he has no memory of her or their time together. At first she refuses to tell him anything but he begins to work at her defenses and as they try to find out what has happened, they are met with opposition that could end them both.

Since Gideon cannot speak the truth he uses what everyone calls Gideon speak. Meaning you have to take what he says that flip it around to get his real meaning. This is one of the reasons why I’ve waited so long to read his book but it was actually easier than I thought it would be. Gena Showalter does a good job of re-explaining everything so no one is left confused. Like all of the Lords, Gideon loves fighting and his friends. He has had many women but Scarlet is the one he wants more than a one night stand with. Even though he can’t remember her, he feels deeply for her and doesn’t like the idea of her leaving him. Scarlet is upset that Gideon can’t remember her and wants to punish him by not telling him anything but that doesn’t last long. She has never stopped loving him and try as she might, she can’t simply walk away. Scarlet is a very strong headed warrior which got to be a bit much at times. I get it, you are a kick ass female who shouldn’t be taken lightly, now can we move on? My favorite scenes involving them were when they were together being honest and real with each other.

Nothing is as it seems in The Darkest Lie. With the involvement of the Gods (well, technically Titans) details are warped and betrayals are brought to light. It definitely kept you on your toes. The books does have it’s slow times but nothing that made me want to stop reading. A person I didn’t expect to like was Cronus. He helped the Lords more than I ever thought he would and was even funny at times. The other Lords are present and are continuing their war with the Hunters. Amun, who will be the next Lord to get his own book, is brought to the forefront of the story and we learn a bit more about what goes on inside the keeper of secrets head. I’m interested to see what his female will be like and how she will handle the situation that Amun is left in at the end of the story. This wasn’t my favorite LOTU story but there are a few surprising secrets and action that has me looking forward to the next book.
My Rating:

Writing a guide to an entire bird Order or Family is an ambitious undertaking. Virtually all bird groups have their well-known and well-loved members, but virtually all also contain those scarce, poorly-known species that lurk hidden away in tropical forests or on remote mountain ridges, living lives in quiet oblivion, out of sight and out of mind.

Take the fictional ‘bush-thrushes’ as an example. Some will be well-known, but some will be so anti-social that birders have rarely seen them, artists don’t really know what they look like when they’re not lying stretched out in museum drawers, and no-one has much of a clue what they sound like. Taxonomy is changing so fast as well that by the time the author finishes his life work and prints off a final draft, some geneticist will have come along saying that half his or her study subjects aren’t in fact ‘bush-thrushes’ at all, aren’t close to flycatchers but are an odd offshoot of the finches which surprisingly are actually closely related to the kingfishers…and the whole book needs writing again.

I’m exaggerating of course, but of all the bird Orders in the world surely the Caprimulgiformes – the Nightjars – must be the closest fit to the above paragraph. So cryptically plumaged that the whole bunch might be better placed in the Camouflagiformes instead, they’re also nocturnal, are found in some fantastically remote locations, appear mind-bendingly similar when do you at last find one, and – as outlined in Nigel Cleere’s extraordinary ‘Nightjars, Potoos, Frogmouths, Oilbird, and Owlet-nightjars of the World’ (’Nightjars’) – contain one member that appears to be closely-related to the Trogons instead (while the whole Order might actually contain the Swifts!).

Personally I can’t imagine any way that my life could have developed that might have led to me writing a book on the Caprimulgiformes, but fortunately for the rest of us someone or something diverted Nigel Cleere’s future towards becoming the world’s leading authority on Nightjars etc and – via 1998’s ‘Nightjars: A Guide to the Nightjars, Nighthawks, and Their Relatives’, numerous papers, research trips, and apparently databasing all of Europe’s bird collections (!) – this remarkable book.

And whoever/whatever it was I thank them, because the birding world is enriched with the publication of this book. Not (and not claiming to be) a detailed study of the entire group, the aim of ‘Nightjars’, to quote from the lengthy and fascination Introduction is, “to present an easy-to-use guide to help identify nightjars and related birds…By providing a tool to help identify [nightjars etc] it is hoped to stimulate greater interest in finding, observing, and studying these phantoms of the night”. If my reaction to it is anything to by (and I reckon I’m pretty much your standard birder) it succeeds superbly. ‘Nightjars’ is as beautiful as it is informative, and I imagine it will fly off the shelves.

Following a typically ebullient Foreword by (conservation hero) Nigel Collar and the aforementioned Introduction (which includes broad distribution maps, a look at plumage and structure, general biology, and discussion of taxonomy), the meat of the book is some 380 pages of species accounts richly illustrated with well over 500 colour photographs (more of which in a moment).

The 135 species covered (100 nightjars and nighthawks, 17 frogmouths, 7 potoos, Oilbird and 10 owlet-nightjars) are ordered in a new taxonomic arrangement (based partly on vocalisations, which makes good sense for such look-a-likes*) and the information given for each one (bar five which are known only from a single specimen) includes length in cm, IUCN Red List category, brief description (how many ways are there to describe ‘looks like a dead leaf’ or ‘looks like a stump’?), main confusion species, known vocalisations (interestingly the vocalisations of nine species have never been described or recorded), habitat, breeding details where known, range, and status. Each account also features an exemplarily large range map, and some also have short footnotes explaining eg taxonomic decisions.

Before moving on I’d like to make a quick comment about the text as I have a feeling that some people might question its apparent paucity. No, there is no feather-by-feather run through and the text is condensed (rather than ‘basic’ as I saw it described in a review on Amazon) but in my opinion at least written descriptions aren’t what a book of this type is mainly concerned with. I’m not qualified to question the book’s accuracy and have no intention of doing so, but I would think that by using the information that is given on features, the range map, the vocalisations (which in the field is usually the first clue that a nightjar is present of course, and often enough to make an ID) and the images any nightjar can be identified.

Anyway, all the information is found, as you look at the open book, on the left-hand page. On the right, or in some cases the right and the following two pages, are the photographs. And, boy, what an astonishing collection of photographs they are!

Nigel Cleere must have poured a lifetime’s of knowledge into the left side of this fantastic book, but I’m afraid many of us birders are undoubtedly ‘right-side brain’ types. When we first open this book I’ll bet it’s the images we’re going to turn to first (which is why I figure reviews need to deal with the text first: start with the photos and I wonder how many birders would read the whole review?).

There are in total 587 photographs in ‘Nightjars’. Every species is illustrated, the vast majority in the field – where images of live birds were unavailable there are photos of museum skins, including skins of all five species that have not been seen since their original discovery. Nigel Collar says in his Foreword that “artwork usually trumps photography to illustrate field guides and handbooks…but, on the other hand, if a publisher is so generous as to provide multiple shots of the species in question, a whole new dimension to the business of field identification opens up”. He goes on to say that despite “the liabilities of photographs – their absolute dependence on the individual and the moment – are quickly offset by their advantages – their undeniable accuracy, their scrutinisable truth”.

He’s absolutely right of course, and the size of the images in ‘Nightjars’, their clarity, and their colour reproduction allow close scrutiny time and time again. But there’s more to a really good photograph: a really good photograph captures an ‘essence of being’, an active, alert intelligence that an illustration somehow can’t. And the vast majority of these are REALLY good photographs.

The work of 190 photographers, many of these photographs have never been published before, and they are with just one or two exceptions (and even they’re very good) astoundingly evocative and profoundly beautiful. Check out the oddly juvenile-thrush-like Swallow-tailed Nightjar on page 190, the almost impossibly haughty Sri Lankan Frogmouth on pages 334 and 335, or the stunning Australian Owlet-nightjar on page 405 for instance. Open almost any page in fact and open-mouthed readers will frequently be heard to gasp “How…?” as they struggle to grasp ‘how’ someone could get any sort of photo at all of birds that any experienced birder will know are hard to find in the first place let alone photograph well. This is without any exaggeration a truly remarkable collection of images that complete a truly remarkable book.

Should the author have commissioned paintings for the species that he couldn’t source photographs for? It’s a point of debate I suppose, but if so why not just go the whole hog and produce an entirely different book? I’m not a fan of lifeless corpses ordinarily, but personally I’m glad that Nigel Cleere decided to keep the collection whole. Others may disagree but I’ll leave the heated discussion to the comments section.

Just as with the last book I reviewed, Chris Gooddie’s highly recommended ‘The Jewel Hunter‘, ‘Nightjars’ is published by WILDGuides (and by Princeton in North America). They’ve obviously not stinted one iota in producing this book. From the inky black jacket with its collage of caprimulgids to the spacious layout inside, this is just a superb production. All the more credit when you think that even at the cover price of GBP45.00/USD45.00 (yes, the same price in dollars as pounds apparently) there will be little profit in a book that depsite its excellence is never going to make the bestseller lists.

And what profit there is to be made will be donated to conservation – specifically BirdLife’s ‘Preventing Extinctions Programme’! To quote from the WILDGuides website)…

“At WILDGuides we are proud of our dual achievements of producing field guides which appeal to the widest possible section of the general public, while also providing financial supporting to worthy causes linked to the species or habitats described in our publications. To date, we have contributed almost £25,000 to conservation charities in Britain and around the world. In the coming years we intend to better our achievements by producing many more field guides to wildlife in Britain and abroad, raising awareness and supporting conservation initiatives in the process.”

That’s a seriously altruistic and laudable approach to publishing for a relatively small company to take, and makes buying ‘Nightjars’ – already a class-leader and a must for every birder’s library – all the more worthwhile.

*The book went to the printers too early for Nigel Cleere to acknowledge the 2010 AOU split of Whip-poor-will into Eastern and Mexican, but the two are separated in the species accounts anyway – perhaps it was his work that contributed to the AOU’s decison?)
